Softcover. SIGNED. The author gathers together stories of criminals hanged at York from the middle of the 18th-century to the late 19th-century, when Leeds superceded York as the place of execution. Ninety short case histories covering a wide range of crimes and criminals - coiners, forgers, murderers, thieves and highwaymen - the most famous being Dick Turpin who was hanged on the Knavesmire for horse-stealing in 1739. Up to 1857 York Castle was the principle place of execution and there was also a gallows at the City Gaol. Probably the most famous female execution was that of Mary Bateman, the Yorkshire Witch, who was convicted of poisoning Rebecca Perigo in 1808 and hanged in 1809. Illus., Appendix (covers Other Hangings at York) + Bibliog. 111pp. 8vo. soft cover. FLAT SIGNED BY STEPHEN WADE. Nr. F.
