Hardback. 1st UK Edn. If Dave Greenberg and Bob Hantz had been born in the Wild West they might have turned into Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. As it is, they were born in 20th century Brooklyn, and decided to become cops instead of robbers. Having done so, they created a new American legend. Once unleashed on the city, they started cleaning up the drug scene in possibly the toughest area of New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant. Night and day they were out there, stalking pushers, buyers, dealers, bosses and gangsters, setting new records for arrests and - more importantly - convictions. Their most famous exploits, using grappling hooks and ropes for rooftop surveillance, swooping down on pushers as if from thin air, earned them the irrevocable nicknames Batman and Robin. They made enemies. While posing as addicts they were held at gunpoint by a suspicious dealer who ordered them to mainline heroin in his presence. They had to shoot it out with a gang of professional gunmen hired to kill them. And they also made enemies inside the establishment. Every step of the way they had to fight against bureaucratic inefficiencies, the jealousy of their colleagues, the suspicions of their superiors, the fumblings and downright corruption of the District Attorney's office. But they made friends too. A superior who kept them going when their dedication faltered. The author worked hard to with the confidence of Greenberg and Hantz, who learned to be suspicious of almost everyone. The resulting story is one of non-stop action and larger-than-life adventure. 359pp. lge. 8vo. h/back. A tad 'musty' but o/w F. in G. only torn pcdw designed by Tim Gaydos. A fairly heavy book which will require additional postage if shipped overseas.
